G2. SDGs and Global Standards for Planning

SDGs and Global Standards for Planning

Destination Support Group

2nd May – 23 May 2022

The United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a global effort to develop common sustainability goals and indicators. On the basis of this, both GSTC and Green Destinations developed global standards to guide and assess the sustainability performance of tourism destinations. This support group will assist destination leaders in gaining an in-depth knowledge about where they are in relation to these global standards and guide them in taking the best possible next steps in their destination strategy, build and identify practical ideas and set roadmaps to lead the destination towards a sustainable future.

About the programme

This is the ideal support group to start reviewing your destination strategy. It will help you identify your destination’s key strengths, weaknesses and opportunities concerning the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the GSTC Standard and the Green Destinations criteria. This support group will also help you define clear steps to design a more sustainable development plan, with the latest insights in regeneration, transformation and destination recovery.

By actively participating in the group, participants are expected to:

  • Evaluate your destination’s performance in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Compare your performance with similar destinations.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge about the global sustainability standards and guide destination leaders to assess and revisit their own destination’s strategy.
  • Analyse, discuss and review the destination’s vision and strategic goals related to the SDGs, COVID-19 and the Climate crisis.
  • Set goals and knowledge based targets for your destination management organisation.
  • Learn from peers with similar ambitions and challenges.
