Climate Risk Assessment

Recognising the increasing relevance for destinations to be prepared for climate-related risks in the present and future horizon, it is highly recommended for this toolkit to start with an assessment of climate impacts and risks on your destination.  Our toolkit currently includes medium and long-term projections (30-80 years), supported by digital maps and infographics to improve data collection for future strategic planning.

This toolkit is developed for destinations, organisations, businesses in the tourism sector, government monitoring bodies, municipalities, islands, and other regions that would like to learn more about their future projections in regards to climate change and increase their preparedness through climate adaptation planning in 3 different perspectives:

Projection of Marine Flood Risk

Why use this tool?

You wish to estimate future coastline changes due to sea-level rise within your area and identify the potential impacts, followed by adapting strategies, such as zoning restrictions, infrastructure improvements, and habitat conservation.

How does it work?

This tool creates flooded region layers using Digital Elevation Models (DEM). These layers include the calculation of the total surface flooded in km2.

What are the outcomes of it?

This tool outlines a digital map of the agreed area:

  • Presenting the impacts of changing water levels in the coastal zone;
  • Correlating tourism data with sea-level rise data;
  • Shareable through email and social media.
  • Assessing local risks of new energy sites.

Projection of Heat stress risk

Why use this tool?

You want to evaluate the projected temperature rise within your area due to climate change, as well as the amount of warming to expect.

How does it work?

Tool generates heat stress layers showing the temperature projected for different scenarios for the chosen location and comparing them with the rest of the world.

What are the outcomes of it?

This tool pulls out findings, conclusions, a histogram and a shareable map:

  • Presenting the temperature rise based on chosen scenarios & time frames;
  • Comparing your area with projections of the world: with a histogram highlighting the range of expected temperature; rise for your destination in comparison with the distribution of expected temperature rise for the rest of the world.

Projection of Rainfall and Snow

Why use this tool?

 You are interested in learning the projected increased rainfall and snowfall within your area due to climate change, as well as the amount of rain or snow to expect.

How does it work?

This tool produces rain/snowfall layers showing the projections for different scenarios for the chosen location and comparing them with the rest of the world.

What are the outcomes of it?

This tool presents findings, conclusions, a histogram and a shareable map:

  • Presenting the projected rainfall or snow based on chosen scenarios and time frames
  • Comparing your area with projections of the world: with a histogram highlighting the range of expected precipitation change for your destination in comparison with the distribution of expected precipitation change for the rest of the world.
